The Critical Global Studies Institute at Sogang University is pleased to host a colloquium featuring Dr. Gyeong-mi Lee.The Kanto Massacre was undoubtedly an act of violence directed at "Koreans," but those who were killed that day were not exclusively Korean. The issue of mistaken identity (오인, 誤認) emerges precisely within this gap. This topic has long been marginalized under the dominant framework of nationalism. This presentation seeks to approach the issue as a means of exploring a universal consciousness in resistance to mass violence such as the massacre. The experience of those identified as Koreans compels us to pose an ontological question: What did “being Korean” mean on that day? Moreover, while often overlooked, the imposition of martial law during the Kanto Massacre provides a critical context that resonates with our contemporary conditions. If a state of emergency marks the threshold of a new social order, then it is precisely on this threshold that our imagination must work to shape the future. Re-examining the Kanto Massacre as a case study may offer valuable insights into this process. We invite all those interested to join us for this important and timely discussion.
