The tŭngsap’an, a simple flatbed mimeograph-style printing device, was initially popularized on the Korean peninsula as a technology of Japanese colonial control. In practice, however, tŭngsap’an printing quickly began to be used for an immense range of both sanctioned and unsanctioned applications, often blurring distinctions between official, commercial, and private textual production. This talk analyzes how, despite significant barriers, the tŭngsap’an helped to facilitate unique forms of political, literary, and artistic expression in Korea under Japanese rule, and meaningfully expanded popular cultural production.
