As a model for the creativity of the masses in power and an object of contested memory, the narrative of the Gwangju Uprising can be (and has been) compared to some popular movements in European history. In this presentation, Nigel Swain and Eve Rosenhaft offer reflections inspired by joining the Gwangju commemoration with friends on May 18, 2019. Nigel explores the parallels between Gwangju and the Hungarian Uprising of 1956, in terms both of the features the two movements had in common and of the ways in which they have been remembered and dis-remembered in subsequent struggles for control of the national narrative. Eve considers points of resonance between Gwangju and the Paris Commune. Other scholars have made direct comparisons between the two events and explored the extent to which Gwangju activists were conscious of the Commune. Eve will focus on aspects of memorialization, with particular reference to the representation of the two movements in recent graphic fiction.
