On the Chinese National Day, October 1, 2017, Chao Mhom Kham Le, the Last  King of Sipsong Pan Na Tai State, presently Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture of Yunnan, PRC China, passed away in Kunming. His death has been perceived by the Tai Lue, both inside and outside China, as the loss of their Chaophandin, the King of Sipsong Panna. The death of Chao Mhom Kham Le led to the revival of traditional Tai royal cremation, co-organized by the Xishuangbanna Buddhist Association, his family members, and lay peoples. The cremation and rituals they conducted symbolically and significantly reflected Tai Lue’s traditional belief, cultural practice, and their loyalty to the lost king. In the Tai traditional state, the Chaophandin, represented the state, the symbolic power, and is the spiritual center that unified the Tai peoples of such kingdom.

In this lecture, Dr. Wasan Panyagaew propose that by contextualizing the revivals of Tai royal cremation and its ceremony conducted for the lost king, under the radical transformation of Xishuangbanna which recently have led to urbanization of Jinghong city, huge investment on housing areas, and modern transportation constructions, the China-Lao rail links particularly, the ritual conducts on the king’s cremation, the king’s spirit worshipping, and the king stupa construction, could be interpreted as a new cult and belief that is provocatively resurrected. It is a symbolic space that reflected Tai Lue’s yearning for their lost king. Metaphorically, it is a hidden transcript that is written by these Chinese Dai minzu of Xishuangbanna, a local story reflecting on their traditional state structure, the lost homeland, in encountering with the new invasion of modern Chinese Empire, which is now going beyond the map of China.
