In this Seminar, building on his argument in Trauma and the Discourse of Climate Change, Lee Zimmerman will argue how we bring discussions both of “globalization” and of “global warming” together. Considering the global memory space as a space of trauma can attune us to the trauma in process constituted by the climate crisis, and thus to the way the ethical imperative emerging from that space necessarily confronts us with a representational challenge—one that, as Cathy Caruth suggests, compels us toward the language of literature. In that light, Lee Zimmerman willl present a conclusion by considering two novels by the German writer W. G. Sebald, suggesting how, in working to expand understandings of the global memory space of trauma, they explore how questions of genocide are necessarily enmeshed with questions of ecocide.
Lee Zimmerman is a professor in the English department at Hofstra University. He teaches and writes on 20th Century American Literature, Psychoanalysis and Literature, and Ecocriticism. His renowned publications include 'Against Depression: Final Knowledge in Styron, Mairs, and Solomon' and essays on Elizabeth Bishop and Frankenstein in light of object relations psychoanalysis. He has constant concern about trauma theory and global warming.
